.: Case overview
The Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin encompasses an area that is home to 800 wineries, or bodegas, 19,000 vine-growers and over 100 companies in the auxiliary sector distributed throughout the region’s close to 150 municipalities. The public sector is represented through the Designation of Origin’s Governing Board and the various regional administrations involved. This concentration of growers and businesses generates internal interactions that have led to a sustained and spectacular development of the areas involved and given rise to new businesses, such as wine tourism.
